Newton. On the shoulders of giants

If you’ve read articles on this site, you’ll know I often build on the ideas from world-leading thinkers and researchers in various fields.

Why would anyone not?

After all, as Sir Isaac Newton (one of the greatest scientific minds ever) once said, ‘If I’ve seen further than others, it’s by standing on the shoulders of giants’

So, people often ask me what books (about money and life) I’d recommend, other than my own, and this page answers that question.

I’ve grouped my favourite books into four broad topic areas, and you can click on whichever section interests you most.

  1. Books on human happiness, motivation and performance.
  2. Books that describe the irrational side of human behaviour.
  3. Books on the (less obvious) rational side of human behaviour.
  4. Books on how we misunderstand investment risk and the flawed economic models behind these misunderstandings.

Any books you buy here will generate a few pennies – to help fund my work.

The prices are the same for you whether you click through from here or go directly to Amazon.

I hope you find this list helpful.

Happy reading 🙂

Section 1: Books on human happiness, motivation and performance.

Here I will describe what this section of my book shop is about

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum

Rethinking Positive Thinking. Paul Claireaux

Title: Rethinking Positive Thinking

Author: Gabrielle Oettinggen

Rethinking Positive Thinking draws on twenty years of research into the science of motivation, by Psychologist Gabrielle Oettingen and her team.

And the book shows how the ‘trust in the universe’ /‘law of attraction’ ideas are not just unhelpful but positively counterproductive.

Dreaming of a wonderful future can alleviate suffering for those with no chance of anything else. But, dreaming alone actually reduces our chances of achieving our goals.

This book turns ‘positive thinking’ on its head, hence the title. And it proves that by focussing on (not avoiding) the obstacles to our goals, we gain the energy to overcome them.
